Villa Recalcati fu luogo di incontri mondani ed ospitò personaggi illustri quali il poeta Parini e Giuseppe Verdi.

Nel 1872 venne acquistata da Giacomo Limido, Gerolamo Garoni ed Eugenio Maroni Biroldi e la villa venne trasformata nell'Albergo Varese (Grand Hotel Excelsior). Nel 1931 divenne poi proprietà dell'Amministrazioone Comunale che la rese la sede dei suoi uffici.

Nel grande parco è custodita l’urna (l’originale restituita, rimane una copia) contenente il cuore di Taddeusz Kosciuszko, eroe del Risorgimento polacco.
