Santuario di Santa Maria del Monte
La storia del Sacro Monte di Varese trova il suo centro nel Santuario di Santa Maria del Monte sopra Varese, citato per la prima volta in un documento del 922, ma certamente di più antica fondazione.
Secondo la tradizione fu S. Ambrogio a portare nel IV secolo sul monte poi detto sacro, la devozione alla Vergine Maria, in ringraziamento per la vittoria qui riportata sugli eretici ariani nei pressi di una torre tuttora esistente entro il recinto del monastero. La torre, costruzione militare tardoromana in seguito consacrata, testimonia l'importanza strategica del luogo per il controllo degli spostamenti da nord. Gli scavi archeologici effettuati in occasione del restauro della cripta del Santuario, terminato nell’ottobre 2015, hanno scoperto evidenze di una chiesa databile al V - VI secolo, abbattuta in età carolingio-ottoniana per erigerne una nuova (IX – X secolo). È stata inoltre confermata l’ipotesi che la cripta fosse la zona presbiteriale dell'edificio altomedievale, sul quale in età romanica si procedette alla costruzione di una chiesa più grande, per il crescente numero di pellegrini. La ristrutturazione d'età sforzesca, iniziata nel 1472 per volontà del duca di Milano Galeazzo Maria Sforza, diede al santuario l'aspetto attuale a tre navate, con presbiterio triabsidato, salvo l'allungamento della navata centrale realizzato nel Seicento insieme all'abbattimento del nartece romanico.
